Back in those days, Russia was in a state of flux and a lot of generals looking for money was talking to other gov't to get sales. Do you think with the recent refusal of USA to sell new F16s to them, would Russia be interested in selling fighters to Taiwan? With the disappearance pretty much of China as a market for Russian fighters and India looking at European fighters, Russia needs a new, big market. Any thoughts?NICOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14567491909555759918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2810814791836407713.post-18432074037376920722011-08-29T11:27:52.881-07:002011-08-29T11:27:52.881-07:00It would be irrelevant. Iranian pilots were aghast at the poor quality, especially as they were used to state of the art F-14s.

During the 1990s, the Russians were indeed desperate to sell combat aircraft. The Iranians purchased MiG-29s, and again Iranian pilots were disappointed (but not nearly as so as they had been with the F-7). Later in the decade, the Russians tried in vain to get the Iranians to purchase the MiG-31 and Su-27 but the Iranians were not interested.

Rather than buy such second rate aircraft, the Iranians wisely decided on indigenously produced ballistic missiles as a means of providing a defense based on deterrence.

It's amusing that some American military analysts are now advocating Taiwan forsake its politically floundering F-16 aspirations in favor of an indigenously produced ballistic missile force; unwittingly validating Iran's defense priorities.Mark Pyruzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00595161519097596575noreply@blogger.com
